While we live in an era of impressive Generative AI capabilities regarding graphics (ChatGPT and other GenAIs have some capabilities here and Napkin looks impressive regarding diagram creation), my recommendation when you’re trying to think through a conceptual graphic is still to use PowerPoint to explore different diagram types (as I haven’t seen GenAI do this well yet).
You can do this by:
- Open Microsoft PowerPoint (*gasp*, I know Amazon doesn’t believe in PowerPoint)
- Click on the Insert tab
- Click on SmartArt button
- Scroll through the graphic types and pick one (don’t spend too long on this — you can change your mind later)
- Add some text to flesh out the graphic
- Click on the graphic you made, and click on “SmartArt Design” (ribbon tab in top-center)
- Click the down-arrow icon in the “Layouts” section, and click on different SmartArt layouts to see how the graphic could work, trying different layouts until you feel inspired
