I recently listened to a Tim Ferriss podcast, where he discussed the parenting approach/concepts of Sovereign Child with Naval Ravikant and Aaron Stupple. It was quite a provocative set of ideas — the core of the approach is to treat children like little adults, giving them significant autonomy to decide things like what to eat, when to go to sleep, how much screen time they want, etc.
While I wasn’t convinced to immediately remove every rule from my house, they made some interesting points, and it’s worth a listen. There were several interesting points, but the most impactful for me was:
As a parent, one of your most important jobs is helping your child find things that interest them, and fan the flames of those interests, so they can pursue them. Be a gateway to interests for your child.
I found it an inspiring point, to reflect on — I want to invest more time helping my kids find things they love, and explore and enjoy them, and less time trying to keep them safe and compliant.
