I’ve been interested in getting back into sailing, after my days teaching sailing down at Camp Pianktank; so I’ve been checking out DC-area sailing options. I thought I’d share what I’ve found for those interested:
- DC Sail
- Classes: Yes, members can take beginner classes to get a US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 cert)
- Rentals: Yes, 6 Flying Scots (19′ day sailors and 12 Flying Juniors (FJs)
- Comments: They’re a non-profit that focuses on giving high school students sailing experience; I’ve heard they’re a great sailing community; they have social sails where non-members can enjoy sailing (I think it’s $20 per social sail for non-members)
- Sailing Club of Washington (SCOW)
- Classes: Yes
- Rentals: Yes, 5 Flying Scots (19′), and three 25′ Catalina/Capri sailboats
- Comments: They have social sails where non-members can enjoy sailing with the group
- Washington Sailing Marina
- Classes: Yes, they offer beginner and keelboat classes
- Rentals: Yes, Flying Scots (19′, 6 people max) and Aqua Fins (small, 2 person boat)
- Mariner Sailing School
- Classes: Yes, they offer small boat sailing classes
- Rentals: Yes, Flying Scots (19′) and Sunfish (14′)
- Comments: I don’t think they have any keelboats (bigger boats)
