2010 WWP Run

Last weekend my company co-sponsored the 4th annual Run for Wounded Warriors at Burke Lake Park.  The event raised over $20,000 for Wounded Warrior Project, a great cause that supports wounded Veterans.  The weather was great (much warmer than last year).

I’m glad so people came out to enjoy the fall weather and contribute to this noble cause.

You can see more pictures from the event here:

Tools to build Web Apps without Coding

I’m not even sure what you call it, but I’d like to find a open source or hosted (software as a service) service solution to allow me to create simple web applications, primarily related to simple database and workflow systems. There seem to be several services in this space, with a variety of positions in the market.

I’m excited to tinker with these and see what I can find that works well — any suggestions?

Billmonk is dead

Billmonk.com is finally completely dead (to my knowledge).  I’ve enjoyed the free web service since Feb 2006, but after months of random error messages it appears to be complete dead.  As I try to recreate my outstanding IOU’s, I’ve been shopping for alternatives which is surprisingly difficult.  Some options I’ve seen so far are:

I’m interested in finding a new solution that isn’t going to collapse, so I’m looking for something with a revenue model or strong backing.  My initial analysis (me looking to see which websites look well made, competent, and stable) has been leaning toward Buxfer.  Any suggestions?

Great (free) Windows Utilities

Here is some free software for Windows that I enjoy:

  • Paint.net – photo editing
  • CDBurnerXP – burn CD’s and DVD’s
  • WinDirStat - little app that shows you the size of your folders (very useful if you’re trying to clean out your hard drive)
  • Crimson Editor – editor for looking at software source code, HTML, XML, etc.
  • EverNote - note program where you can capture notes and tag them
  • FreeMind - mind-mapping application (a great brainstorming application)

Preventing Email Spoofing with PKI

So I was thinking to myself in class last night while we were discuss various network security topics that email providers should digitally sign (with public-key encryption) their emails to verify that the emails aren’t being spoofed. I figure, one of the big problems with spam is spammers who spoof that they’re from some legitimate email domain (like yahoo, gmail, aol, etc.). Of course, I seem to be 2 months behind the curve, as Yahoo came up with DKIM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DomainKeys), which pretty does exactly that.
